Summer begins on December 21st and continues until March. This is the vacation and holiday period in Paraguay. School starts early in February. During the summer the thermometer climbs up to 45 degrees ... in the shadow. This is the period in which the watering-place called San Bernardino (founded by Germans) becomes alive. During the rest of the year the place is nearly deserted, but from December on, the streets and beaches become crowded. During the high-season the nights are for having fun and closing time does not exist any more. Each night has its own happening, for example an election of a Miss Beauty or Miss Tanga or any other type of event. On the Lake Ypacarai the jet-skis are hunting each other, people enjoy their spare time on a motor boat and the sailing-vessels are gliding majestically over the lake's surface. Wealthy Paraguayans amuse themselves in exclusive clubs in San Bernardino or on their yachts on the River Paraguay. Common people use to bathe in the River Paraguay, too, and in San Bernardino they stay on the spectators' beach or in one of the numerous public swimming-pools called balneario (balnearios are private beaches near a river, sometimes equipped with dance floors, football fields, volleyball fields, kiosks or restaurants). In that period of the year the weather is sunny and quite hot, but it is the rainy season and once a week a tropical rain patters down.
From April to June is autumn and the weather is not stable. During this time it is possible that one day is hot with more than 30 degrees Celsius, and the next day the temperature falls to 10 degrees Celsius. Winter is from June 23rd until September 23rd and the temperature sometimes do not exceed 2 degrees Celsius during the night. The average of the daily peak values are from 11 to 24 degrees Celsius. The dates of the seasons are exactly the opposite to those ones of Europe. Time difference to Germany is four hours during Paraguayan summer, for example: in Germany it is 8p.m. then in Paraguay it is 4 p.m. And in Paraguayan winter the difference is six hours, for example: in Germany it is 8 p.m. then in Paraguay it is 2 p.m. The humidity is between 60% and 90%.
